Maher’s Guide service focuses on fly fishing adventures on the Truckee and Little Truckee Rivers. Welcome to the New Year with new resolutions and a fresh start! Also remember your new 2018 fishing license! What are some of your resolutions? Fish more? Tie more flies? Some of mine include; fish new water and try to think outside the box a little bit more!
With this little plug of rain we just received across Northern California, this will help the low and clear waters of the Truckee River and Little Truckee. The Truckee has been fishing on and off, depending on the access pressure, water temperatures, and clarity. Typically this time of year, you will find a majority of the fish holding in what we call “winter water.” Winter water is deemed slow walking speed water. The fish can hang out and feed as they please without using too much energy to feed. Think energy-in versus energy-out. Cold temperatures also keep the fishes metabolism down, thus most won’t move far for food. You have to get the fly close enough to the nose for these educated fish to eat!
With that said, BWO’s, small caddis, and some winter stones have been popping off, not much of a dry fly game at the moment. “Searcher flies” have been the trusty SJ, egg patterns, pats rubber legs, BWO’s, and of course our lovely winter midges. Ive been fishing those in size 18 & 20. 5x in this clear water too…
The Little Truckee River
The Little Truckee River flow has been low lately, but there is some dry fly fishing to be had about mid-day. The hatch is fast and won’t last long, so pick a good spot and hunt for noses. It’s usually a safe bet to suspend a dropper fly, subtle grabs too! Branch out, look for different spots, and try to think outside of the box!
